When approached by Historic Royal Palaces with a unique problem the Pyro Studio found a unique answer, could we find a flame that could be lit in very large numbers in a precious and vulnerable space in the centre of a city, that would burn reliably in wind and rain for 4 hours with out producing noxious or corrosive gases.
We found the unique answer in the french chemistry of the MIC flames. 90,000 MIC torches were then used to create HRP’s stunning ‘Beyond the Deepening Shadows’ installation at the Tower of London by Tom Piper, Mira Calix, Deborah Shaw and Phil Supple.
Compared to other flames these are safer, easier to light and more resilient to wind and rain than wax torches and candles.

The Flames have no smoke and very low odour, far less smell than wax candles or wax torches. They are cleaner than any wax flame with no soot or spilt wax and safer than any comparable oil flame. The flame liquid has a flash point in excess of 90 degrees centigrade so it will not burn if spilt on the ground.
Our flames are safe to store. The high flash point of the flame liquid means that it is not considered a flammable liquid and requires no special storage. They have a low radiant heat. The cans outer surfaces remain cool so the flames can be simply placed on the ground and they will not scorch the surface beneath. Beyond the actual flame there is very little heat radiated to the sides making them relatively easy to mount. Our standard metal holders can create a variety of heights for a large installation.
